Let’s have a look at an overview of Pirelli’s history and how Pirelli’s tyre technology has improved over the years.

Pirelli's History Overview

Pirelli was established in Milan, Italy, in 1872 as a company focused on producing elastic rubber products. Their initial product line focused on rubber bands for carriage wheels, and they opened their first processing plant in 1885.

In 1894, Pirelli made a significant breakthrough when they introduced their first tyres for velocipedes, which are now commonly referred to as bicycles.

The Early 1900s: From Bicycles to Motorcars

In 1901, with the arrival of motorcars, the demand for suitable tyres increased. In response, Pirelli expanded its operations by establishing production plants in different countries, including England, Spain, and Argentina.

Pirelli has a rich history in motorsports, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to the racing world and having supplied the tyres for the winning car in the inaugural Grand Prix organised by the Automobile Club of France.

The 1920s: Global Expansion and Technology Advancements

In 1922, Pirelli was the first Italian company to have shares traded on the US market, making this year a historic milestone for the company.

The Superflex Stella Bianca, the first sport tyre specifically designed for high speeds with a reinforced tread, was designed just after World War I.

The 1950s and 60s: Increasing Tyre Performance

The first radial tyre, the Cinturato, was launched in 1953 after four years of development and testing. It was highly acclaimed for increasing tyre safety, performance, and durability.

High-performance sports cars appeared in the 1960s and 1970s that frequently exceeded the performance limitations of the available tyres at that time. Pirelli developed tyres like the Cinturato P6, P7, and P8 thanks to their extensive experience in motorsports. These tyres met the needs of the new generation of ultra-performance vehicles.

The 1980s and The 21st Century: Pirelli's Worldwide Expansion

Between the 1980s and 2010, Pirelli had a significant expansion, resulting in the opening of 19 production factories in 12 countries. Employing more than 31,600 staff in the world, the company produces a wide range of tyres for cars, motorcycles, and bicycles.

In addition, since 2017, Pirelli has been the official tyre supplier to the FIM World Superbike Championship, including its supporting series. By the end of the 2010 season, the company had notably replaced Bridgestone as the sole tyre supplier for Formula One.

Pirelli’s Product Range

Pirelli typically categorises their tyres into one of three distinct product ranges: Scorpion, Cinturato and P-Zero.

Scorpion: Strong and Reliable Tyres

Scorpion Pirelli tyres feature increased grip levels in challenging conditions, which could include ice, rocks, or wet grass, without compromising on tread life. The Scorpion Pirelli range provides drivers with confidence and safety on the road.

Cinturato: Eco-Friendly Performance Tyres
